About the Mmope Family
Mmopa wa Kgomo le Motho
The Mmope family originally comes from Botswana. They belong to Bakgatla ba Kgafela Tribe. Kgaudi is the father of four boys: Mpeki Mmope, Ntiti Abram Mmope, Isaac Saki Mmope and Raesebo Ezekiel Mmope. Kgaudi was one of the expedition that went to Kimberly and worked for The Royal Bafokeng. He died in the mines of Kimberly. Raesebo had two sons: Mantsoe Mmope and Keatlholetswe Eli Mmope, both born and bred in Chaneng. Mantsoe has two children, Botlhale-Ba-Modimo Mmope and Kgolagano Mmope.
Kgaudi came to settle in Chaneng, North West back in 1870’s. He got his land from an old man, Ramagatalena Mmope. The land of Chaneng was founded and administered by five main families of which the Mmope family is a part of. The Bakgatla were nomadic, therefore, came and settled in Chaneng, North West, together with other people. Their cohabitation resulted in the formation a community of Chaneng - which is part of the Royal Bafokeng Nation.
Mmope is a person who is full of love. Their beautiful emotions create harmony and balance for anyone who is blessed enough to become their friend. Always graceful and charming when dealing with others, displaying emotional intelligence. Creativity runs through the viens of a Mmope. Bringing people together for a common cause or to solve disagreements is parts of the Mmope traits. the impression that is displayed is one of playful elegance and safety - Therefore, people will always feels safe because a Mmope will always give joy which is one of the world’s greatest gifts.
We call ourselves Mmope, which is RraMmopa wa kgomo le motho, Ke Mmope wa Rantjo’wa Thotwana, which means, “the clay owner/moulder who moulds a cow and mankind; Mmope who has abundance of food sitting on a hillside”. This is so beautiful considering the vision of The Mmope School of Arts - to mould mankind through artistic expressivity and creativity.
